ROCKO II in harvesting action
Did you know? Bombastus as a producer of herbal remedies relies on a customised tipper from STEMA for its sage harvesting.
Herbal remedy producer Bombastus uses STEMA trailers
Bombastus from Freital can look back on a long tradition and is particularly well known for its use of the sage plant. In order to harvest it, the company relies on a customised car tipping trailer from STEMA. The ROCKO II facilitates the work for the field team by means of its electric hydraulic pump.
Bombastus-Werke AG in Freital is a producer of natural remedies that is also well-known beyond the region where it is based. The company has a 120-year history and can boast a product range that includes medicines, medicinal plants, oral and skin care products, essential oils and fragrances. Sage, in particular, has become a trademark ingredient for the company. Bombastus has been cultivating the medicinal plant in its own fields near the company site in Freital since 1914. The company uses an efficient rotation system for the sage harvesting: two harvesting cages are used simultaneously, with one always in the field while the other is transported by a car trailer to the drying hall in Freital, where the plants are prepared for further processing.
ROCKO II rocks the sage harvest
In order to make the field team’s work as easy as possible, a trailer meeting specific requirements is used to transport the sage cages: a customised ROCKO II from STEMA. Why is this rear tipper with an electric hydraulic pump used you may ask? This is because the three-stage lifting cylinder of the tipper easily handles larger loads, while operation at the push of a button simplifies the work of Bombastus’ staff. And that strength is certainly required, as each harvest cage contains up to 600 kilograms of sage, while the cage itself also weighs an additional 400 kilograms. The battery required for the pump is stored directly in the trailer and is charged during transport. It and the pump unit are housed in an aluminium box, protected from splashing water and stone chipping.
Easy unloading with hydraulic tipping
Another benefit for the field team is the low height of the trailer, as this facilitates rapid loading directly from the harvesting vehicle: The tractor pulls up and lifts the cage directly onto the trailer. Later, when arriving at the drying warehouse, the secured cage can simply be opened, and the sage plants are unloaded by tipping the trailer. The low centre of gravity of the ROCKO II is important in ensuring the stability of the shipments. The cages themselves have a high centre of gravity and must be transported as low as possible. Furthermore, the STEMA V-drawbar and the sturdy rubber spring axle with its independent wheel suspension provide the braked high-loader with reliable tracking and stable road holding. Despite all these features, the ROCKO II is still a relatively lightweight car trailer and doesn’t require a special towing vehicle.
Ground clearance is essential in the field
The ROCKO II's stability on uneven terrain is due to the fact it is a twin-axle trailer. Its high load-bearing beams also provide ample ground clearance, which proves very handy on field tracks and rough ground. The Bombastus team needs a large obstacle-free platform as a loading area to ensure there is enough space for the harvesting cage. The customised rear tipper is equipped with just such a platform, while dispensing, for instance, with the standard drop sides. The trailer's high-loader design ensures an optimal ratio between the trailer width and usable space. Rails for the rollable cage are fitted on the platform, allowing it to be easily rolled on or off.
ROCKO II and SySTEMA form the foundation
The Bombastus trailer differs in some of its details from the standard ROCKO II. So, what usually characterises the latter? The transporter is a compact rear tipper designed for demanding commercial uses. The solid steel profile tipper body and the double-walled drop sides of the standard version can even handle heavy loads with ease. The base frame and tipping bed of the ROCKO II are welded from solid steel sections and hot-dip galvanised. The three-stage telescopic cylinder is hard-chrome plated and extremely durable.

The foundation of the ROCKO II is once more the SySTEMA series. It is built in accordance with a modular principle, and thus creates a foundation that can be customised as required. This means that the trailer can be fitted with different superstructures such as high tarpaulins or lattice attachments and ladder frames in no time at all. The drop sides and stanchions can also be removed. This flexibility means it can be easily optimised for specific tasks - in just the same way as Bombastus. Moreover, businesses only require one trailer for various transport tasks due to its versatility and adaptability.
